It seems that the more tools and resources we designers have at our fingertips, the more we are tempted to stray from core principles\u2014and as my astute programmer friend Gregor Brandt points out, these design guidelines apply equally well to software development. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vitsoe.com\/en\/gb\" target=\"_blank\">Vitsoe<\/a> lays out and illustrates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vitsoe.com\/en\/gb\/about\/dieterrams\" target=\"_blank\">Dieter Rams<\/a>\u2019 well-stated criteria for <em>Good Design<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vitsoe.com\/en\/gb\/about\/gooddesign\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBack in the early 1980s, Dieter Rams was becoming increasingly concerned by the state of the world around him\u2014\u201can impenetrable confusion of forms, colours and noises.\u201d Aware that he was a significant contributor to that world, he asked himself an important question: is my design good design?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>As good design cannot be measured in a finite way he set about expressing the ten most important criteria for what he considered was good design. Subsequently they have become known as the \u2018Ten commandments.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vitsoe.com\/en\/gb\/about\/gooddesign\" target=\"_blank\">Here<\/a> they are:<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Good design is innovative.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Good design makes a product useful.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Good design is aesthetic.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Good design helps us to understand a product.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Good design is unobtrusive.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Good design is honest.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Good design is durable.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Good design is consequent to the last detail.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Good design is concerned with the environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Good design is as little design as possible.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Frankfurt, Germany I&#8217;ve posted on this before (here) but \u201ccommandments\u201d are worth reiterating, right?
