Southampton, New York<\/p>\n <\/em><\/p>\n Herbert Matter<\/a> (1907\u20131984) was a Swiss-born American photographer and graphic designer known for his pioneering use of photomontage in commercial art. His innovative and experimental work helped shape the vocabulary of 20th-century graphic design. Read an excellent biography (written in 1976) outlining his prolific career here<\/a>. Paul Rand<\/a> (known to many in our field as somewhat of a curmudgeon) wrote the following poem<\/a> about Herbert in 1977:<\/p>\n Herbert Matter is a magician.<\/p>\n To satisfy the needs of industry, that’s what you have to be.<\/p>\n Industry is a tough taskmaster.<\/p>\n Art is tougher.<\/p>\n Industry plus Art, almost impossible.<\/p>\n Some artists have done the impossible.<\/p>\n Herbert Matter, for example.<\/p>\n His work of ’32 could have been done in ’72 or even ’82.<\/p>\n It has that timeless, unerring quality one recognizes instinctively.<\/p>\n It speaks to all tongues, with one tongue.<\/p>\n It is uncomplicated, to the point, familiar, and yet unexpected.<\/p>\n Something brought to light, an image, a surprise, an analogy.<\/p>\n It is believable, as it is unbelievable.<\/p>\n It always has an idea, the one you almost thought of.<\/p>\n It may be formal or anecdotal, full of sentiment, but not sentimental.<\/p>\n It is commercial; it is contemplative.<\/p>\n It enhances the quality of life.<\/p>\n It is Art.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Southampton, New York Herbert Matter (1907\u20131984) was a Swiss-born American photographer and graphic designer known for his pioneering use of photomontage in commercial art.
