{"id":2015,"date":"2009-08-03T10:06:44","date_gmt":"2009-08-03T15:06:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.robertlpeters.com\/news\/?p=2015"},"modified":"2018-10-29T01:19:41","modified_gmt":"2018-10-28T20:19:41","slug":"never-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/robertlpeters.com\/news\/never-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Never again&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertlpeters.com\/news2013\/wp-content\/uploads\/yusaku_kamekura_hiroshima.jpg\" alt=\"yusaku_kamekura_hiroshima.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Hiroshima, Japan<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For those involved in the peace movement around the globe, thoughts this week turn once again to the horrors of Monday, August 6, 1945\u2014when at 08:15 the first nuclear weapon ever deployed on human beings (a bomb named <em>Little Boy<\/em>) was dropped on <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atomic_bombings_of_Hiroshima_and_Nagasaki\" target=\"_blank\">Hiroshima<\/a> by the crew of the American B-29 bomber <em>Enola Gay<\/em>. Three days later, at 11:02 on Wednesday, August 9, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atomic_bombings_of_Hiroshima_and_Nagasaki\" target=\"_blank\">Nagasaki<\/a> was the target of the world\u2019s first plutonium bomb (named <em>Fat Man<\/em>) dropped by the U.S. B-29 Superfortress <em>Bockscar<\/em>, flown by the crew of 393rd Squadron.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005, I was one of 24 designers invited to contribute posters for <em>Lest We Forget: Canadian Designers on War<\/em>, an initiative marking the 60th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (I\u2019ve posted on that previously, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertlpeters.com\/news\/?p=43\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>). Michael Surtees attended that show opening at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton\u2014see his <em>flickr<\/em> photo gallery from the evening <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/michaelsurtees\/sets\/499213\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #999999;\">Image above: a moving poster designed by the late great <a style=\"color: #999999;\" href=\"http:\/\/yusakukamekura.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yusaku Kamekura<\/a>, considered by many to be the father of graphic design in Japan.
