So, naturally, I was quite enthused when I heard from a designer friend in Porto today (<em>Toze<\/em>, aka <a href=\"http:\/\/altitudsketches.blogspot.com\/2009\/06\/interview-with-antonio-coelho.html\" target=\"_blank\">Antonio Coelho<\/a>, himself one of Portugal\u2019s premier mountaineers) that his long-time climbing partner, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joaogarcia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jo\u00e3o Garcia<\/a>, has just become the <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong>10th climber to summit all 14<\/strong><\/span> of the world\u2019s mountains over 8000 meters (26,246&#8242;) without supplementary oxygen. For Jo\u00e3o, this culminates a quest he began 17 years ago with the ascent of Cho Oyu (Jo\u00e3o was also the first Portuguese to summit Everest, in 1999).<\/p>\n<p>The summit of Annapurna marked another first on 17 April 2010, the day of Jo\u00e3o Garcia\u2019s ascent: the 36-year-old Spanish climber Edurne Pasaban became the first woman to summit 13 of the 8000ers, putting her at the front of the race among women climbers to match <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robertlpeters.com\/news\/?p=4054\" target=\"_blank\">Reinhold Messner<\/a>\u2019s momentous 1993 achievement.<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">Parab\u00e9ns!<\/span><\/h1>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Annapurna, Nepal I\u2019m a moderately-skilled, low-altitude mountaineer (mostly rock-climbing and summit scrambling)\u2014which puts me in a position of more than a little awe of those who push the boundaries of alpinism.
