{"id":7813,"date":"2011-06-07T11:25:56","date_gmt":"2011-06-07T16:25:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.robertlpeters.com\/news\/?p=7813"},"modified":"2011-06-07T11:25:56","modified_gmt":"2011-06-07T16:25:56","slug":"when-a-logo-becomes-unfortunate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/robertlpeters.com\/news\/when-a-logo-becomes-unfortunate\/","title":{"rendered":"When a logo becomes&#8230; &quot;unfortunate.&quot;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7814\" title=\"Archdiocesan_Youth_logo\" src=\"http:\/\/www.robertlpeters.com\/news2013\/wp-content\/uploads\/Archdiocesan_Youth_logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"437\" height=\"327\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is the &#8220;award-winning&#8221; logo designed for the Catholic Church&#8217;s <strong>Archdiocesan Youth Commission<\/strong> by Gerry Kano in 1974.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the 1970s really were simpler, gentler, more innocent times (?)\u2026 and it can happen that designers at times &#8220;get too close&#8221; to their own work to &#8220;see the bigger picture&#8221;\u2014yet it seems hard to believe that no one in the decision-making and client-side approval process saw just how badly this could be interpreted.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #888888;\">Steven Heller offered some astute comments on this design in an AIGA article (from 2009): <em>&#8220;On some occasions, logos are more than marks of failure or malfeasance; sometimes they unintentionally illustrate the foibles or folly of a company or institution all too vividly\u2026 the unfortunate pictorial relationship between the priest and the child, given our collective awareness&#8230; suggests a much too ironic interpretation. It&#8217;s a challenge to see what this positive\/negative image once suggested, a guardian protecting the innocent, since the benevolence of its subject is no longer black and white.
