He even climbed the Matterhorn in 1928. Following is a poem he wrote that references his struggles over his loss&#8230;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">I have not lost the magic of long days:<br \/>\n<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">I live them, dream them still.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Still I am master of the starry ways,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">and freeman of the hill.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"> Shattered my glass, ere half the sands had run,\u2014<br \/>\n<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">I hold the heights, I hold the heights I won.<br \/>\n<\/span>Mine still the hope that hailed me from each height,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: #ff9900;\">mine the unresting flame.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"> With dreams I charmed each doing to delight;<br \/>\n<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">I charm my rest the same.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Severed my skein, ere half the strands were spun,\u2014<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">I keep the dreams, I keep the dreams I won.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">What if I live no more those kingly days?<br \/>\n<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">their night sleeps with me still.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">I dream my feet upon the starry ways;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">my heart rests in the hill.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">I may not grudge the little left undone;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">I hold the heights, I keep the dreams I won.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2014Geoffrey Winthrop Young (1876-1958), climber, poet, educator, author, and conscientious objector Geoffrey lost a leg during World War I\u2026 though he continued alpine climbing for years thereafter, using a specially designed artificial leg that accepted a number of attachments for snow and rock work.
