A discussion ensued regarding the intrinsic qualites imbued in Rams\u2019 remarkable products designed for Braun in the 1960s and \u201970s (I still use my ergonomically-perfect 30+ year-old <em>Braun ET66<\/em> calculator daily\u2014not even a change of batteries in three decades!), and Gary mentioned an article he had seen on <em><a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/343641\/1960s-braun-products-hold-the-secrets-to-apples-future\" target=\"_blank\">Gizmodo<\/a><\/em> recently that reveals the uncanny design similarity between Apple\u2019s products today and Braun products from when we were kids.<\/p>\n<p>When Gary returned to Toronto last night he sent me the <a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/343641\/1960s-braun-products-hold-the-secrets-to-apples-future\" target=\"_blank\">link<\/a>\u2014here are Dieter Rams\u2019 <em>\u201810 principles for good design\u2019<\/em> as often cited by Jonathan Ive (the \u201cgenius\u201d designer behind Apple\u2019s successful products):<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Good design is innovative.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Good design makes a product useful.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Good design is aesthetic.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Good design helps us to understand a product.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Good design is unobtrusive.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Good design is honest.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Good design is durable.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Good design is consequent to the last detail.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Good design is concerned with the environment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Good design is as little design as possible.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>(Thanks, Gary).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999;\"><em>Images: Some direct design comparisons between the Braun products by Rams and the Apple products by Ives.
